Jiu Jitsu in Singapore

After returning from Singapore I thought I would write about my experience. This was my second time visiting this amazing city and this time I brought 8 passionate grapplers from around the world for the 4th edition of the Free Rollers BJJ Getaways.

If you mention BJJ or MMA and Singapore or even South East Asia then you are sure to have Evolve top the list of recommended schools to train at, and for VERY good reason.

Evolve Mixed Martial Arts is Asia’s top martial arts organization. Their award-winning instructor team includes authentic World Champions in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, Boxing, Wrestling, No-Gi Grappling, and more. They have been consistently ranked as the #1 martial arts organization in Asia by many leading authorities. In my opinion Evolve MMA ranks among the very best in the world, not just in regard to the roster of coaches but also in the facilities.

The purpose of the BJJ Getaways is simply to immerse ourselves into the local culture, training as much as we possibly can, recovering, seeing some of the many tourist sites and then training again. Our days basically were made up of Morning training, food, rest, lunchtime training, sightseeing, food, washing, Evening training and food then rest and repeat. Unfortunately, this trip I sustained a Rib Injury on the first night that kept me off the mats for the first session of day 2 but with the help of some serious pain killers, I was able to get through the rest of the trip.

The fact that Evolve has so many BJJ champions teaching there such as Teco Shinzato, Fabio De Mata, Valdir Rodriguez, Carica Von Held and so many more, was a huge plus factor for us choosing to train there, so when the injury came up I was always going to do whatever I could to stay on the mats as long as I could.

Singapore from all reports can be a very expensive city but like anywhere if you are out and away from the hot spots it is quite achievable to do Singapore on a budget. I was surprised at how cheap the taxis and public transport were here. It is by far the safest and cleanest city I’ve ever been to. Food was reasonably cheap if you don’t go to fancy restaurants.

The atmosphere at training was fantastic. Everybody was so friendly and asking me a lot of questions about where I came from and what I was building with the Free Roller brand, with a lot of interest in joining trips in the future! I can’t wait to have some of our Singaporean friends join us on the mats in a future BJJ Getaway location.

All of the instructors were extremely friendly and smiling and I had the chance to roll the majority of them, except Professor Teco, who made up for this with a visit to the Free Rollers Garage the next month where I had the opportunity to train with him and a few others for a couple of mind-blowing hours. Their instruction is next level and I took home with me some new details, concepts and drills that I’ll be working into my own training regime.

We had access to the full schedule of classes and with the added bonus of up to 5 BJJ classes a

day in each branch from early morning to late evening meaning that we could work in some sightseeing around the numerous class times. We would just hop into a cab and head to one of the locations which were from 5 mins to 15 mins from Geylang were we were staying.

Everyone on the trip were lucky enough to build some solid friendships with some of the and instructors and have kept in touch via various social media channels.

In August 2020 we will return with a bunch of new faces joining us for their first Getaway and a few returning faces who couldn’t get enough of their first trip.

Obviously, I am biased, but I strongly recommend travelling with the intent to train, even if it is not on one of our BJJ Getaways it will be one of the most rewarding things you can do for your BJJ journey.

We have 1 spot left for our upcoming trip to Singapore. If you want the opportunity to train at one of the world’s most famous mixed martial arts academies, Evolve MMA, and also enjoy the exotic hidden treasures of the beautiful tropical island of Singapore. Simply follow the below link to book your spot in before they are all gone.

See you on the mats!
